Delaware State Parks Tactile Waysides Series

Holts Landing State Park and White Clay Creek State Park | Dagsboro and Newark, DE

As the Exhibits Coordinator for Delaware State Parks, Laura led the creation of six tactile waysides for two state parks — Holts Landing and White Clay Creek. With tactile letters and images, braille, and raised QR codes to accessible content, these signs share the wonders of their sites in uniquely engaging ways. The projects won a 2025 Interpretive Media Award from the National Association for Interpretation.

Services provided:

  • Interpretive Signs

Tactile signs were the perfect media to share stories along newly-accessible trails.

  • Project Management

Funding from the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) made documentation and organized project management even more important.

  • Interpretive Planning

Planning for these projects required several site visits — and we were happy to hit the trail!

  • Research & Content Development

One project dug into historic land use in northern Delaware; the other dove into marshy ecosystems in the southern part of the state.

  • Interpretive Writing

Writing the text for all six waysides, Laura often shed light on under-appreciated resources.

  • Fabrication Coordination

Laura worked with accessibility consultants, graphic design contractors, and tactile specialists to fabricate the award-winning signs.
