Bitter Lake Reservoir Park

Seattle Public Utilities | Seattle, WA

Bitter Lake Reservoir Park will be redesigned to create more space for its diverse community to gather and recreate. Working with prime contractor HBB Landscape Architecture, Understory is creating illustrations for the new park’s interpretive signage. These paintings will reveal fascinating — but often overlooked — water systems and their importance to the region.

Services provided:

  • Audience Evaluation

Understory helped gather community feedback on designs-in-progress at a Bitter Lake community center, local food bank, and Asian market.

  • Custom Illustrations

Laura made initial drawings and then used watercolor to bring them to life.

  • Research & Content Development

Digging deep to reveal lesser-known aspects of pipes and water systems is a fascinating endeavor.

  • Interpretive Planning

Using feedback from community engagement sessions, we clarified themes and stories.

  • Interpretive Signs

We coordinated the illustrations with client-led content and graphic design for the interpretive signs.

  • Project Management

Regular review periods and meetings keep everyone on track while providing ample room for feedback.
