Whitman Mission

Whitman Mission National Historic Site | Walla Walla, WA

Between 1975 and 2023, the interpretive signs at Whitman Mission had not changed. They presented a biased perspective of historical conflicts between local Tribes and white settlers. Park staff worked with members of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to rewrite the narrative. Angela managed the design of new waysides and created custom illustrations, in close collaboration with the NPS and Tribal representatives.

Services provided:

  • Project Management

Angela led the design, illustration, and fabrication coordination for this project. Above is the color sample reviewed by our team before production.

  • Interpretive Signs

Rough concept sketches served as critical tools for discussion with NPS staff and Tribal partners, allowing us to move fluidly through the rest of the process.

  • Custom Illustration

Tribal consultants guided the content and conceptualization of illustrations that Angela created.
